The current enrolment at our school is now approximately 330 and includes students from junior kindergarten to grade 8. At Jack Callaghan school we strive to excel in academic achievement, the arts and athletics. We value the whole child and with the support of our community strive to help our students to become good global citizens by nurturing strong character traits and positive citizenship. We have taken a responsibility for guardianship of the earth and make an effort to reduce our carbon footprint and help others to do the same. Jack Callaghan has been given Gold Ecoschool certification from Ontario Ecoschools. We are one of six schools in the province to attain gold status. We encourage our students to interact in a productive caring manner and to treat themselves and each other with respect.
Jack Callaghan school offers small productions in the arts, and instrumental music class in drumming circles, playing the flute, and dance. We participate in altruistic ventures supporting cancer research with the Terry Fox run each year and the Me To We club. Robotics, coding, and MakerSpace have become an integral part of 21st Century student learning in grades 3 – 8. We have also been part of a pilot program 3 years ago involving the Nelson Publishing Company whereby our grade 8s and another grade 8 class at Riverside PS used the Edwin technology system as a tool to access levelled learning in the grade 8 curriculum. It was such a tremendous success that it is now being offered in all TLDSB schools for grades 7, 8, 9, and 10.
Athletic opportunities such as cross country, volleyball, basketball, skipping, soccer and track and field are offered at the school. We are very fortunate to have the Kawartha Trans Canada Trail running right past the back of our school. We have a strong Core French program for grades 4 – 8 where students are taught basic conversational French skills to use in realistic life experiences such as in retail stores and restaurants through a variety of hands-on approaches. We have a healthy character education program and pride ourselves as being “The Golden Rule School” striving to treat others as we ourselves would like to be treated. Educators at JCPS collectively focus on a growth mindset and share this perspective with their students to help all students achieve their potential.
The staff at Jack Callaghan form a cohesive, collegial and professional team with the best interests of the students at the forefront of all our endeavors. Teachers take a careful look at our continual assessments and move to continually improve and incorporate high yield teaching strategies to accommodate the needs of all our learners. We work together as a team for our students in Professional Learning Communities engaging in professional discourse and developing targeted strategies for improvement in academics for our students.
